Aluminum & asphalt coatings

5 products · 5 ready to ship

The asphalt side of the range. Aluminum coatings resurface metal, smooth built-up, granulated cap sheet and modified bitumen roofs in silver, with no primer named. Asphalt emulsions go down first on roofs that have dried out or alligatored, and both emulsions are listed for use with reinforcing fabric.

Why this range

  • Fibered and non-fibered, both in stock

KST020475 is the premium fibered aluminum and KST020480 the commercial grade fibered aluminum, both silver, in pails and drums. KST020418 is the non-fibered silver, made with asphalt and gilsonite, in a 5-gallon pail.

  • Granulated cap sheet included

All three aluminum coatings list metal, smooth built-up, granulated asphalt and granulated or smooth modified bitumen. No primer is named for any of them: a pressure wash, a fully dry roof, 50 °F or warmer and no rain forecast.

  • Fibered grades over light rust

The fibered 500 and 300 are listed to go directly over lightly rusted metal roofs without a primer. The non-fibered Superbrite is not listed that way, and heavier corrosion is a question to send us with the roof.

  • Emulsions for a roof that has dried out

KST040312 and KST040314 are listed for extremely dried-out or heavily alligatored smooth built-up and modified bitumen roofs, ahead of an elastomeric or aluminum coating. One carries poly fiber, one does not.

  • Reinforcement in the same pass

Both emulsions are listed for use with fabric, so splits, laps and flashings can be three-coursed while the emulsion is going down rather than in a separate visit.

Where it's used

  • Metal roofs being resurfaced

Panel roofs that need a silver coat rather than a white system, including panels with light surface rust under the fibered grades.

  • Smooth built-up roofs

Smooth BUR that is still sound and needs its surfacing renewed. Where the asphalt has dried out, the black asphalt primer can revive it first; it is not a required step.

  • Modified bitumen and granulated cap sheet

Granulated cap sheets and granulated or smooth modified bitumen, under an aluminum coating after a wash and a full dry, or under an emulsion first, depending on how dried out the surface is.

  • Dried-out and alligatored roofs

Surfaces that have crazed and lost their flexibility, where the emulsion is the layer the manufacturer lists before any coating goes on.

  • Industrial and back-of-house roofs

Warehouse, plant and outbuilding roofs where silver is the accepted finish and a white elastomeric system is not what the owner is buying.

How to choose

  1. Fibered or non-fibered aluminum?

KST020475 and KST020480 carry fiber and are listed over lightly rusted metal; KST020418 does not carry fiber and is not. The manufacturer product data sheet states the film build and coverage each one asks for, and the quote sizes the order from the roof area you give us.

  2. Premium or commercial grade?

KST020475 is the premium fibered grade and KST020480 the commercial grade, with the same silver color and the same pail and drum sizes. The data sheets set out the difference; the quote prices whichever the specification names.

  3. Primer, emulsion or straight down?

Most roofs on the list take the aluminum coating straight down after a wash and a full dry. Dried-out smooth BUR or modified bitumen can take the black asphalt primer first to revive it, never a granulated surface. An extremely dried-out or alligatored roof takes an emulsion first.

  4. Fibered or non-fibered emulsion?

KST040312 is poly-fiber reinforced and KST040314 is not. Both are black, both come in 5-gallon pails and 55-gallon drums, and both are listed for use with fabric.

Questions

Will an aluminum coating go over rust?

The fibered ones, over light surface rust, yes: KST020475 and KST020480 are listed to go directly over lightly rusted metal roofs without a primer. The non-fibered KST020418 is not listed that way. Heavier corrosion is beyond what the data sheets describe, so send us the roof before you order.

Will it go over a granulated cap sheet?

Yes. The current data sheets for all three aluminum coatings list granulated asphalt and granulated or smooth modified bitumen, alongside metal and smooth built-up, with no primer named. Wash the roof, let it dry fully, and coat at 50 °F or warmer with no rain forecast.

Do I need the asphalt primer first?

Not as a rule. The aluminum coatings name no primer for any substrate. The black asphalt primer KST020412 rejuvenates smooth BUR and modified bitumen that has dried out; it is not a required first step and it is not for granulated surfaces.

Is an asphalt emulsion a finish coat?

Not in this range. Both emulsions are listed ahead of an elastomeric or aluminum coating on dried-out or alligatored roofs. What goes over them, and how long after, is set out in the manufacturer product data sheet.

Can I reinforce with fabric?

Yes. Both emulsions are listed for use with fabric, and the three-course method with polyester fabric is how splits, laps and flashings get detailed. Widths are in Reinforcing fabrics & seam tapes.

Why is the freight quoted separately?

Aluminum coatings are asphalt-based and regulated for transport, as are the asphalt primers. We quote the freight with the order rather than guess at it, and the quote states what it covers.

What colors are there?

Silver for the aluminum coatings, black for the emulsions. If the project wants a white, gray, tan or matched roof, that is the finish coat range instead.

About this collection

Not every roof is getting a white elastomeric system. Plenty of metal, smooth built-up, cap sheet and modified bitumen roofs are resurfaced in silver, and plenty of older asphalt roofs need a black emulsion in them before anything else is worth doing. This collection is that work, all of it Sherwin-Williams Uniflex, held in stock and quoted against the roof.

The aluminum coatings come in three grades of the same silver. KST020475 is the premium fibered grade and KST020480 the commercial grade fibered, both in 5-gallon pails and 55-gallon drums. KST020418 is the non-fibered coating, made with asphalt and gilsonite, in a 5-gallon pail. All three list metal, smooth BUR, granulated asphalt and granulated or smooth modified bitumen, and none of their data sheets names a primer: the preparation is a pressure wash and a fully dry roof, at 50 °F or warmer with no rain forecast. The two fibered grades are also listed to go directly over lightly rusted metal; Superbrite is not.

The black asphalt primer KST020412 has a narrow job here: it revives smooth BUR and modified bitumen that has dried out, before the aluminum goes on. It is not a required step and not for granulated surfaces. The emulsions are the heavier fix underneath. KST040312 is poly-fiber reinforced and KST040314 is not, both black, both in pails and drums. Their listed use is the same: extremely dried-out or heavily alligatored smooth built-up and modified bitumen roofs, ahead of an elastomeric or aluminum coating, with fabric worked in at the details.

Where the roof needs more than a resurfacing, the rest of the range picks it up. Close splits and low spots with Patch & repair, find the primers and base coats in Base coats & primers, and if the owner wants a white or tinted roof instead of silver, go to Elastomeric & silicone finish coats. Send the part numbers, the roof area, the site ZIP and your dates through the quote form and we price material and freight together.
