KST020412 Uniflex Asphalt Primer, Black

  • Asphalt primer
  • Sold by the pail

The black asphalt primer that rejuvenates dried-out smooth built-up and modified bitumen before an aluminum coating. It is not a required first step and not for granulated surfaces: the aluminum coatings name no primer. Stocked in 5-gallon pails and 55-gallon drums, moved as regulated freight.

Key benefits

  • A rejuvenator for dried-out smooth BUR and modified bitumen, used where the old asphalt surface needs it, not on every roof
  • Not a required first step: the aluminum coatings' data sheets name no primer for any substrate
  • Not for granulated cap sheets or granulated modified bitumen, which take the aluminum coating after a wash and a full dry
  • Asphalt technology, in the same chemistry family as the asphalt-based aluminum coatings that go over it
  • Two pack sizes, the 5-gallon pail and the 55-gallon drum; it ships as regulated freight, quoted with the order

Overview

KST020412 is a black asphalt primer, in the same chemistry family as the aluminum coatings that go over it, and its job is narrower than the name suggests. It rejuvenates smooth built-up and modified bitumen whose surface has dried out, before a Uniflex aluminum coating goes on. It is not a required first step: the current data sheets for the aluminum coatings name no primer for any substrate, and their preparation is a pressure wash and a fully dry roof. It is not for granulated surfaces either; granulated cap sheets and granulated modified bitumen take the aluminum coating directly.

So buy it only where the roof calls for it. We stock the primer in 5-gallon pails and 55-gallon drums alongside KST020475 and KST020480, the fibered aluminum coatings, and KST020418 Superbrite, the non-fibered one. Close the splits and open laps first with KST058600 wet-dry roof cement. It has no place under Silicone44 or under an acrylic system.

Application

  • The roof has to be clean, dry and sound before anything is primed. Debris, loose granules and standing water are prep, not coating.
  • Details are reinforced first: splits, laps, penetrations and flashings get roof cement and polyester fabric before the field is primed.
  • Use it only on smooth BUR or smooth modified bitumen that has dried out. Granulated surfaces and sound smooth asphalt go straight to the aluminum coating after a wash and a full dry.
  • Work to the rates, film build and cure times printed in the manufacturer’s product data sheet, and inside its temperature window.
  • Hold the recoat window between the primer and the aluminum coating exactly as the sheet states it.

Ordering

KST020412 is stocked in 5-gallon pails and 55-gallon drums. Stocked material ships in 1 to 3 business days; anything not on the shelf is ordered in and runs 1 to 2 weeks. Drums, pallets and the freight that carries them go through the quote form with your part numbers, quantities, site ZIP and dates. As an asphalt primer it moves as regulated freight, quoted with the order, and every price here is quoted per project rather than printed.

Where it's used

  • Dried-out smooth built-up roofs

Aged smooth BUR whose surface has dried out, being brought back with an aluminum coating instead of torn off, where the primer revives the old asphalt before the silver goes on.

  • Dried-out smooth modified bitumen

Smooth-surfaced APP and SBS modified bitumen that has dried out and is heading under a fibered or non-fibered aluminum coating.

  • Where it is not used

Granulated cap sheets and granulated modified bitumen, sound smooth asphalt that has not dried out, and any roof going under Silicone44 or an acrylic system. The aluminum coatings name no primer at all.

  • After the patch work

Goes down once the splits, open laps and blisters have been closed with roof cement and polyester fabric, not before. Prep order matters more than product choice here.

Questions

Which coating goes over this primer?
An aluminum coating: KST020475 or KST020480, the premium and commercial fibered aluminums, or KST020418 Superbrite, the non-fibered one. Their current data sheets name no primer for any substrate, so this primer goes on only where a smooth asphalt surface has dried out and needs reviving.
Does every asphaltic roof need it?
No. It is not a required first step. The aluminum coatings go on after a pressure wash and a fully dry roof, at 50 °F or warmer with no rain forecast. This primer is for smooth BUR and modified bitumen that has dried out; granulated cap sheets and granulated modified bitumen do not take it.
Does it go under a silicone or acrylic coating?
No. Uniflex puts no asphalt primer under Silicone44; where asphalt may bleed through a silicone, Uniflex's Bleed Blocker Primer goes first, which we do not stock, so ask on the quote. The acrylic systems use the MB base coat on asphaltic roofs.
How does it ship?
As regulated freight, quoted with the order. That is true of asphalt primers, the solvent-based materials and the aluminum coatings in this catalog, so the freight is priced with the material rather than guessed at afterwards.
Pail or drum?
Both are stocked. The 5-gallon pail suits sections and details; the 55-gallon drum suits a whole roof. Put the area on the quote request and the quote states the pack count, the delivered price and the ship window.
Is this the same thing as the asphalt emulsions?
No. KST040312 and KST040314 are fibered and non-fibered asphalt emulsion coatings, listed for extremely dried-out or heavily alligatored smooth BUR and modified bitumen ahead of an elastomeric or aluminum coating. KST020412 is a primer, not a coating.
