KST040314 Uniflex Non-Fibered Asphalt Emulsion Roof Coating, Black
- Non-fibered asphalt emulsion
- Sold by the pail
The non-fibered asphalt emulsion, in black. The manufacturer lists it for extremely dried-out or heavily alligatored smooth built-up and modified bitumen roofs, ahead of an elastomeric or aluminum coating, and lists it for use with reinforcing fabric.
Key benefits
- Non-fibered asphalt emulsion, the layer the manufacturer lists before a coating on a dried-out or alligatored asphaltic roof
- Listed for use with fabric, so details can be three-coursed as the emulsion goes down
- Manufacturer-stated to ASTM D1227 Type II
- Stocked in 5-gallon pails, with 55-gallon drums quoted with the order
- The fibered twin, KST040312, covers the same roofs where poly fiber is specified

Overview
KST040314 is the non-fibered asphalt emulsion, in black, and it does the same job as its fibered twin without the poly fiber in it. The manufacturer lists it for extremely dried-out or heavily alligatored smooth built-up and modified bitumen roofs, ahead of an elastomeric or aluminum coating, and gives its standard as ASTM D1227 Type II. It is a layer in a system, never the layer the weather sees.
Which emulsion a job buys usually comes down to what the specification names and how much body the surface needs. KST040312 carries fiber; this one does not. Both are listed for use with reinforcing fabric, so the splits, laps and flashings get three-coursed while the field is going down. Rates, film build, cure and how long to wait before the coating above it all come from the manufacturer’s product data sheet, and the quote works the quantity from the roof rather than a nominal figure.
Application
- Start on a roof that is clean and sound underneath. Wash the field, clear ponded silt and loose surfacing, and cut out anything that has failed.
- Detail before the field: splits, open laps, flashings and penetrations three-coursed with polyester fabric bedded in the emulsion.
- Prepare the substrate as the manufacturer’s product data sheet lists for a dried-out or alligatored asphaltic roof.
- Apply at the rate and film build the data sheet states, and leave the cure time it requires before the coating above goes on.
- Keep the product data sheet and the safety data sheet on site. They set the conditions the emulsion may be applied in.
Ordering
KST040314 comes in 5-gallon pails and 55-gallon drums. Stocked pack sizes ship in 1 to 3 business days; anything not on the shelf is ordered in and runs 1 to 2 weeks. Drums, pallet quantities and freight go through the quote form, and every price is quoted per project rather than printed here. Send the part numbers, the quantities, the roof area, the site ZIP code and your dates, and one price comes back covering the emulsion, the fabric and the coating that goes over it.
Where it's used
-
Heavily alligatored smooth BUR
Smooth built-up roofs that have crazed and lost their flexibility, the condition the manufacturer names for this product, ahead of the coating that follows.
-
Dried-out modified bitumen
Modified bitumen roofs dried out past the point where the manufacturer lists a coating on its own.
-
Three-course detail work
Splits, open laps, flashings and penetrations reinforced with polyester fabric bedded in the emulsion, which this product is listed for.
-
Ahead of an aluminum coating
Asphaltic roofs being resurfaced in silver, where the emulsion goes down first and a fibered or non-fibered aluminum coating follows.
-
Ahead of an elastomeric system
Roofs heading for an elastomeric finish, where the emulsion comes before the base coat and the finish coat the data sheet names.

Questions
- Fibered or non-fibered?
- KST040314 carries no fiber; KST040312 is poly-fiber reinforced. Both are black, both come in 5-gallon pails and 55-gallon drums, both carry the same listed use and both are listed for use with fabric. The specification and the manufacturer's data sheet decide which the job buys.
- Can it be the top layer?
- Not in this range. The manufacturer lists both emulsions ahead of an elastomeric or aluminum coating. What goes over the emulsion, and how long after, is in the manufacturer's product data sheet.
- Can I three-course details with it?
- Yes. It is listed for use with fabric, and three-coursing with polyester fabric is how splits, laps and flashings are detailed. The widths are 6 in, 12 in and 40 in, in Reinforcing fabrics and seam tapes.
- How do I know the roof needs an emulsion?
- The manufacturer's wording is extremely dried-out or heavily alligatored. A roof that is only weathered may not need one. Send the roof type, the square footage and a description of the condition and we read the data sheet against what you describe rather than guess from here.
- How much will the roof take?
- The manufacturer's product data sheet states the coverage rate and the film build. Send the square footage and the condition and the quote works the pails or drums out for that roof.
