Overview
KST020475 is the premium fibered aluminum coating in the Uniflex range, the 500 grade, in silver. It is asphalt-based and carries fiber, and the manufacturer lists it over metal, smooth built-up, granulated asphalt and granulated or smooth modified bitumen, with no primer named for any of them. On metal roofs it is listed to go directly over light surface rust without a primer, which is the reason it turns up so often on panel roofs where a full prime-and-paint sequence is more than the building is paying for.
Silver is not a compromise on this kind of work, it is the specification. Plenty of warehouse, plant and outbuilding roofs are resurfaced in aluminum rather than coated white, and a fibered coating is what gets asked for where the surface needs body rather than a thin film. Where the roof has dried out or alligatored, the manufacturer lists an asphalt emulsion ahead of an aluminum coating, and both emulsions are in the same collection. Rates, film build and cure come from the manufacturer’s product data sheet.
Application
- Start on a roof that is clean, dry and sound. Wash the field, clear ponded silt and loose surfacing, and deal with failed material before anything is coated.
- Reinforce and close the details first: splits, open laps, flashings, penetrations and fastener rows, with fabric or roof cement as the detail calls for.
- Prepare by pressure washing and let the roof dry fully; coat at 50 °F or warmer with no rain forecast. Light surface rust on metal needs no primer for this coating. Where smooth BUR or modified bitumen has dried out, the black asphalt primer KST020412 can rejuvenate it first; granulated surfaces do not take it.
- Apply at the rate, film build and coat count the manufacturer’s product data sheet states, in the conditions it allows.
- Keep the product data sheet and the safety data sheet on site. An asphalt-based aluminum coating has handling rules of its own.

Questions
- Will it go over rust?
- Light surface rust, yes. The manufacturer lists the fibered 500 and 300 to go directly over lightly rusted metal roofs without a primer; the non-fibered Superbrite is not listed that way. Heavier corrosion is beyond what the data sheet describes, so send us the roof before you order.
- Does it need the asphalt primer?
- Not as a rule. The data sheet names no primer for any substrate; preparation is a pressure wash and a fully dry roof, at 50 °F or warmer with no rain forecast. The black asphalt primer KST020412 rejuvenates dried-out smooth BUR and modified bitumen. It is not a required first step, and it is not for granulated surfaces.
- Premium or commercial grade?
- KST020475 is the premium fibered grade and KST020480 is the commercial grade fibered. Same silver, same pail and drum sizes, same substrate list. The manufacturer's data sheets set out the difference and the quote prices whichever the specification names.
- Fibered or non-fibered?
- This one carries fiber. KST020418, the Superbrite silver, does not. The manufacturer's product data sheet states the film build and the coverage each one asks for, and the quote sizes the order from the roof area you send.
- Why is the freight quoted separately?
- Aluminum coatings are asphalt-based and regulated for transport, so they move as regulated freight. We quote that freight with the order rather than guess at it, and the quote states what it covers.
- How much will my roof take?
- The manufacturer's product data sheet states the coverage rate and the film build. Send the square footage, the roof type and its condition and the quote works the pails or drums out for that roof.
