KST034520 Uniflex Rust-Inhibitive Metal Primer, Red

  • Alkyd metal primer
  • Sold by the pail

The red alkyd primer in the Uniflex line, made for metal roofs where corrosion is the reason the crew is up there. Listed for all types of metal including iron and steel, stocked in 5-gallon pails and 55-gallon drums, and quoted per project with the coats that go over it.

Key benefits

  • The corrosion-minded primer of the pair: its substrate line names all types of metal surfaces, including iron and steel, where corrosion is a problem
  • Alkyd technology in a red primer, so a primed panel reads at a glance and holidays are easy to spot before the base coat
  • Manufacturer-stated against Federal Specification TT-P-636D, which is the standard printed on the data sheet for this primer
  • Two pack sizes, the 5-gallon pail and the 55-gallon drum, which covers a fastener-row repair and a full panel roof
  • The primer under both metal systems: Uniflex primes every rusted area with it under Silicone44 too, with no base coat over it

Overview

Corrosion is the usual reason a metal roof gets coated, and a rust-inhibitive primer is the first thing on it. KST034520 is the red alkyd primer in the Uniflex line, and its substrate line is blunt about its job: all types of metal surfaces, including iron and steel, where corrosion is a problem. The manufacturer states it against Federal Specification TT-P-636D.

The red is useful on the roof as well as on paper, because a primed panel is obvious and a missed one is too. It sits under both metal systems. Under Silicone44, Uniflex’s silicone specifications have the crew wash the roof, tighten or replace fasteners, fasten laps open more than 1/8 in, prime every rusted area with this primer and let it cure, then stripe the laps with the silicone and coat the field, with no base coat. Under the acrylic system we stock it in 5-gallon pails and 55-gallon drums with the rest of the sequence: KST041320, the gray premium acrylic elastomeric base coat listed for metal, KST041300, the premium acrylic white finish coat, KST020804 butyl seam tape for the seams and fastener rows, and KST041220 acrylic patching cement for the flashings.

Application

  • Start on clean, dry, sound metal. Loose rust, scale, oil and dirt come off first; that work decides the outcome more than the primer does.
  • Reinforce the details before the field: seams, fastener rows, penetrations and flashings take tape or fabric bedded in the base coat.
  • Prime by substrate. Corroding iron and steel is what this primer is listed for; pre-finished fluorocarbon panels point to the white acrylic primer instead.
  • Apply at the rates, film build and coat count in the manufacturer’s product data sheet, inside its temperature window.
  • Let the primer cure fully before the next coat, base coat or silicone, and take cure times from the sheet rather than from the weather.

Ordering

KST034520 is stocked in the 5-gallon pail and the 55-gallon drum. Stocked material ships in 1 to 3 business days; anything not on the shelf is ordered in and runs 1 to 2 weeks. Drums, pallets and freight go through the quote form, and the quote states how the material is handled in transit. Send part numbers, quantities, the site ZIP and your dates, and a person prices the primer, the base coat and the finish coat together; every price here is quoted per project.

Where it's used

  • Screw-down metal panel roofs

Exposed-fastener steel roofs where the panels, laps and fastener rows have started to corrode and the roof is being restored rather than replaced.

  • Standing-seam steel

Standing-seam panels with rust at the ribs, clips and terminations, primed before an elastomeric base coat carries fabric or tape over the seams.

  • Iron and steel roof details

Curbs, stacks, ladders, equipment rails and other iron and steel on the roof surface, which the substrate line covers alongside the panels themselves.

  • Spot priming corroded areas

Bought in the 5-gallon pail for the corroded sections of an otherwise sound roof, where only part of the field needs a rust-inhibitive primer under the system.

  • Ahead of an elastomeric system

The first coat of a metal restoration whose later layers are the gray base coat and a white or tan finish coat from the same line.

Questions

When do I use the red primer instead of the white one?
KST034520 is the alkyd primer whose substrate line is about metal where corrosion is a problem. KST036520 is the white acrylic version, and its list adds pre-finished fluorocarbon (Kynar) metal roofing. Read both data sheets against the panels you have.
What standard is on the data sheet?
Federal Specification TT-P-636D, stated by the manufacturer for this primer. We print it as the manufacturer states it and we hold no test report of our own behind it.
What goes over it?
It depends on the system. Under the acrylic system, an elastomeric base coat and then a finish coat: KST041320, the gray premium acrylic listed for metal as a base coat, then KST041300, the premium acrylic white. Under silicone there is no base coat: once the primer has cured, the end laps, fastened seams and ridge-cap laps are striped with Silicone44 KST044300 (white) or KST044320 (gray) and the field is coated.
Do I have to prime the whole roof?
The manufacturer product data sheet decides that from the substrate and its condition, and plenty of metal roofs are primed only where they are corroded. Send photographs and the panel type with the quote request and the quote lists the pails the described roof needs.
How is it priced and how does it ship?
Every price is quoted per project through the quote form, against part numbers, quantities, site ZIP and dates. Stocked material ships in 1 to 3 business days; the quote states how the material is handled in transit and what the freight costs.
