Overview

There are details on a roof where the sealant will be looked at. A skylight frame, a vinyl trim line, a stone coping, a terrace parapet on an occupied building. KST058450 is the clear grade of the Uniflex tripolymer, a 10.3 oz cartridge packed 24 to the case, and it closes those joints without adding a color to the surface.

The substrate list is the same broad one the white and black grades carry, and it is the reason this cartridge turns up around glazing: coated metal (Kynar), brick, concrete, glass, vinyl, steel, tile, wood and asphalt. Application is listed from 0 F to 140 F, service from -40 F to 180 F, tack free at 2 hours and cure at 4 to 6 days. The white cartridge is KST058400, the black is KST058410, and the same clear material comes as the 29 oz KST058451. On a skylight being restored rather than resealed, the clear skylight coating KST019100 is the related product.

Application

  • Clean the joint back to sound, dry material. Glazing and vinyl want the contaminants off, not just the dirt.
  • Prime by substrate where the system calls for it, with a concrete primer on cured concrete and the stated preparation on glass and metal.
  • Seal the visible details before the field is coated, so no coating overspray or tooling mess ends up on a glazing line.
  • Gun and tool a neat bead. Clear shows tooling marks and trapped air more than a pigmented sealant does, so keep the gun steady.
  • Follow the manufacturer’s product data sheet for joint design, bead size, cure and anything that may go over the sealant.

Ordering

KST058450 is sold by the 10.3 oz cartridge and by the case of 24. Stocked cases ship in 1 to 3 business days, and anything not on the shelf is ordered in and takes 1 to 2 weeks. As a solvent-based product it ships as regulated freight, quoted with the order. Put the part numbers, quantities, site ZIP and your dates on the quote form and one price covers the lot. Every price is quoted per project.

Where it's used

  • Skylight and glazing frames

Frame joints and glazing perimeters on skylights and roof lights, where glass and vinyl are on the substrate list and the bead stays in view.

  • Vinyl and trim details

Vinyl trim, cladding edges and window head details that meet the roof, closed without introducing a second color.

  • Tile and stone work

Ridge, hip and penetration joints on tile roofs and stone copings, where the surface has a color a white or black bead would break up.

  • Mixed-finish metal

Roofs with several metal colors, where one clear cartridge covers details that would otherwise need two or three colors of sealant.

  • Visible details on occupied buildings

Terminations at penthouse walls, stair bulkheads and anywhere the detail is seen from a terrace or a window.

Questions

Does the clear grade cure like the white and black?
Yes. All three tripolymer colors are listed at 2 hours tack free and 4 to 6 days cure, unlike the MS hybrid range where the clear grade has its own times.
Is it invisible once cured?
It is a clear sealant, not an invisible one. A tooled bead still has an edge and a profile. What clear avoids is a color that contrasts with the surface it sits on.
Can it be used on glass?
Glass is on the maker's substrate list, along with vinyl and tile. The manufacturer's product data sheet covers the preparation each of those needs.
Which size for a skylight job?
The 10.3 oz cartridge suits unit-by-unit work. For a long continuous glazing perimeter, KST058451 is the 29 oz version, six per case, and needs a barrel gun.
How does it ship?
As regulated freight, because the product is solvent-based, quoted with the order. Stocked cases leave in 1 to 3 business days.
