Overview
The tripolymer is the cartridge for everything that is not metal or membrane. Brick, block, concrete, glass, vinyl, tile, wood and asphalt are all on its list, along with coated metal (Kynar) and steel, which makes KST058400 the tube that handles a coping joint, a skylight frame and a panel lap without swapping products.
It is a solvent-based sealant, and the stated numbers reflect that: application from 0 F to 140 F, which is the widest application window in the cartridge range, service from -40 F to 180 F, tack free in 2 hours and cure given as 4 to 6 days. White is the color for white coated roofs and light masonry; KST058410 is black and KST058450 is clear, and the same white material comes as the 29 oz KST058401 for long runs.
Application
- Prepare a clean, dry, sound joint. Rake out old sealant, brush porous masonry free of dust, and degrease metal and glazing.
- Prime by substrate where the system calls for it: a metal primer on steel, a concrete primer on cured concrete, the stated preparation on glazing.
- Seal and reinforce the details first, then coat the field, so nothing has to be reopened after the base coat is down.
- Gun a full bead and tool it into the joint so both faces wet out. On porous brick and block, work the bead in rather than laying it on.
- Follow the manufacturer’s product data sheet for joint design, bead size, cure and what may be applied over the sealant and when.
Ordering
KST058400 is sold by the 10.3 oz cartridge and by the case of 24. Stocked cases ship in 1 to 3 business days, and anything not on the shelf is ordered in and runs 1 to 2 weeks. This is a solvent-based product, so it ships as regulated freight, quoted with the order. Send the part numbers, quantities, site ZIP and your dates through the quote form; every price is quoted per project.
Where it's used
-
Masonry parapets and copings
Brick, block and concrete coping joints and wall terminations, where the substrate is porous and the joint keeps moving with the building.
-
Glazing and skylight frames
Frame and curb joints around skylights and roof glazing, which is why glass and vinyl are on the maker's substrate list.
-
Coated metal and steel details
Panel laps, fastener heads and trim joints on coated metal (Kynar) and steel, gunned and tooled before the coats go on.
-
Tile roof terminations
Ridge, hip and penetration details on tile roofs, where the sealant has to grip a hard glazed surface.
-
Cold-weather detail work
Joints sealed down to the listed 0 F application limit, ahead of the field coats when the weather allows them.

Questions
- When is the tripolymer the right cartridge?
- When the joint is masonry, concrete, glass, vinyl or tile. Those are on its list and not on the polyurethane or MS hybrid lists, which cover metal and membranes respectively.
- How long does it take to cure?
- The maker lists 2 hours to tack free and 4 to 6 days to cure. That is the longest cure in the cartridge range, so plan the detail work ahead of anything that has to go over it.
- Is it suitable for EPDM, TPO or PVC?
- Those membranes are not on this list. The MS hybrid sealants are the ones listed for EPDM, TPO and PVC: the black KST058310 over aged TPO and PVC as they are, the white over TPO and PVC primed with KST058700.
- 10.3 oz or 29 oz?
- The 10.3 oz cartridge, 24 per case, suits scattered detail work. KST058401 is the 29 oz cartridge, 6 per case, for long continuous runs where reloading costs more than the bigger tube.
- How does it ship?
- This is a solvent-based product, so it ships as regulated freight, quoted with the order. Stocked cases go out in 1 to 3 business days.
