Reinforcing fabrics & seam tapes
KST020806 Uniflex Butyl Seam Tape, 6 in × 50 ft
- Seam tape
- 6 in × 50 ft
- Sold by the case
Six inches of self-adhering Uniflex butyl on a 50 ft roll, four rolls to the case. The width for tall panel profiles, joints that have opened up and flashing details where 4 in leaves too little material on either side.
Key benefits
- Six inches gives a wide bearing either side of a joint, which is what an opened seam needs
- Self-adhering butyl rubber, rolled down dry, with no wet coat to wait on
- Four 50 ft rolls per case, 200 linear feet of wide detail work per box
- Listed for seams, flashings, penetrations and other roof details across the Uniflex range
- Same butyl as the 2, 4 and 8 in rolls, so widths can be mixed on one order without mixing products

Overview
There is a point where a 4 in tape stops being enough. The seam profile is tall, or a lap has worked open over a few seasons, or the flashing detail is simply wider than the roll. KST020806 is the 6 in width of Uniflex self-adhering butyl, 50 ft to the roll, four rolls to the case, and it buys back the bearing surface either side of the joint.
The trade-off is linear feet per box: four rolls instead of six, so plan the takeoff before the order. Where the joint is narrow after all, the same butyl runs at 2 in and 4 in; where it is wider still, KST020808 is the 8 in roll. For details that want film build rather than a dry tape, the 12 in polyester fabric KST20385B is the alternative.
Application
- Start clean, dry and sound. Butyl bonds to sound metal, membrane and coating, so scale, dirt and oil come off first.
- Prime as the substrate requires. Metal panels take a metal primer; EPDM takes the wash primer, and other membranes are pressure washed instead; bituminous surfaces have their own preparation.
- Repair before you tape. Refasten, reform or close the joint mechanically, then run the tape over the finished detail.
- Roll the full width down under firm pressure, working from the center of the joint outward, and lap the roll ends generously.
- Follow the manufacturer’s product data sheet for preparation, temperature limits, lap widths and what may be applied over the tape.
Ordering
KST020806 is sold by the case of four 6 in × 50 ft rolls. Stocked cases ship in 1 to 3 business days, and a width that is not on the shelf is ordered in on a 1 to 2 week lead. Pallets of tape, and the drums or totes of coating that go with them, are freight and are priced through the quote form with the part numbers, quantities, site ZIP and your dates. Every price is quoted per project.
Where it's used
-
Tall and open panel seams
Standing seams with a high profile and side laps that have worked open, where the tape has to bridge the gap and still bear on sound metal both sides.
-
Wider flashing details
Base flashings, counterflashing laps and reglet lines that are wider than a 4 in run, closed dry before the coating.
-
Curb and hatch perimeters
The perimeter joint around equipment curbs, roof hatches and smoke vents, taped ahead of the field coats.
-
Gutter seams and outlets
Long lapped seams in existing gutters and the joint at an outlet, where a wide tape covers a joint that is no longer flat.
-
Transitions between materials
Tie-ins where metal meets modified bitumen or a membrane and the joint needs a wide, dry seal under the system.

Questions
- When do I step up from 4 in to 6 in?
- When the profile is taller than the tape can sit over comfortably, when the joint has opened, or when the detail is wide enough that 4 in would leave less than an inch of bearing on each side.
- Will it bridge a gap on its own?
- Tape spans a joint; it is not a structural repair. If a seam has parted or a panel is distorted, the repair comes first and the tape closes the finished detail.
- Does it need coating over?
- On a Uniflex coating job, yes. This tape is listed for details under the system. If you want a taped repair that is not coated over, the fleece-backed MS hybrid bonding tapes are the ones listed for that.
- How much is in a case?
- Four rolls of 50 ft, so 200 linear feet before end laps. A roof with long gutter seams can go through a case quickly, so send the lengths and the quote counts cases.
- Can it go on a Hypalon roof?
- Yes. The butyl seam tape is listed for EPDM and CSPE Hypalon roofs, coated over with the elastomeric the same day. It is the only detail product in our catalogue the manufacturer lists for Hypalon: none of our cartridge sealants names it, so on Hypalon the sealant is confirmed with the manufacturer's technical service and an adhesion test before the order. Tell us the membrane type.
- Is this a stocked width?
- All four butyl widths are stocked lines. Stocked cases ship in 1 to 3 business days, and anything off the shelf is ordered in and runs 1 to 2 weeks.
