Overview
KST042200 is the gray coat for the jobs where an acrylic is not what the specification asked for. It is a solvent-based thermoplastic elastomeric, and the manufacturer lists it in two roles, base coat or finish coat, across a wider substrate line than the acrylic grays carry: metal, polyurethane foam, smooth BUR, modified bitumen, granular cap sheets and the other surfaces its data sheet lists.
The solvent chemistry changes how it is bought as well as how it is used. It moves as regulated freight, quoted with the order, so the transport is settled on the quote rather than after it. We stock it in 5-gallon pails and 55-gallon drums with KST042100, the matching white finish coat, KST034520 red alkyd metal primer, KST020385 polyester fabric and KST058500 brushable repair sealant for the details.
Application
- Clean, dry and sound first. Rust, chalk, oil, loose granules and standing water are prep work, and a solvent-based coat corrects none of them.
- Prime by substrate, and only where the manufacturer’s product data sheet calls for a primer on the roof in front of you.
- Reinforce the details before the field: seams, laps, fastener rows, penetrations and flashings take fabric or tape bedded into this coat.
- Apply at the rates, film build and coat count the manufacturer’s product data sheet states, inside its temperature window, with the ventilation and handling the safety data sheet requires.
- Hold the recoat window between coats as the sheet states it, and where this coat is the finish coat, take that role from the sheet.

KST042200 is stocked in the 5-gallon pail and the 55-gallon drum, and the manufacturer also makes it in a 275-gallon tote, which we order in. - When is a solvent-based coat the right choice?
- When the specification or the manufacturer product data sheet calls for one. The sheet states the substrates, the conditions and the temperature window, and those are the grounds for the decision. We stock both sides of the line and quote either.
- What is the matching finish coat?
- KST042100, the premium solvent-based elastomeric in white, which shares the same substrate line. The data sheets state the film build, the coat count and the recoat window between the two.
- Is it water based?
- No. The manufacturer states solvent-based thermoplastic technology for this product. The acrylic grays, KST041320 and KST041520, are the water-based coats in the same two roles.
- How does it ship?
- As regulated freight, quoted with the order. That applies to the solvent-based materials, the asphalt primers, the aluminum coatings and the aerosol in this catalog, so the freight is priced with the material.
- Which primer goes under it?
- The substrate decides, and the data sheet decides whether a primer is needed at all. On corroding metal that is usually KST034520, the red alkyd rust-inhibitive primer, which is on the solvent side of the line as well.
