Key benefits

  • Listed for damp, oily or slightly dirty surfaces, which is what most repair calls actually offer
  • Brushed out over an area rather than gunned into a joint, so it suits blisters, patches and rough repairs
  • Fibered, solvent-based material with the widest stated temperature range in the sealant group
  • Application and service both listed from -40 F to 250 F
  • 1-gallon cans, four per case, and the maker states it is not for EPDM

Overview

Repair work rarely happens on a clean dry roof. The blister that has to come out is damp underneath, the seam is oily, the patch area is gritty whatever the broom does. KST058500 is the white grade of the Uniflex brushable roof repair sealant, a fibered solvent-based material the maker lists for many roofing materials including damp, oily or slightly dirty surfaces.

It comes in 1-gallon cans, four to the case, and it is brushed out over an area rather than gunned into a joint, which is the practical difference from the cartridges. Application and service are both listed from -40 F to 250 F, tack free is listed at 4 hours and cure at 5 days. Two limits matter: it is not for EPDM, and it is not a coating system on its own. Black is KST058510 and clear is KST058550.

Application

  • Get the area as clean, dry and sound as the roof allows, and take off everything loose even where the surface itself stays damp.
  • Prime by substrate where the system calls for it, and check the membrane first: this material is not for EPDM.
  • Deal with the defect before the sealant. Cut out blisters, close splits, refasten loose metal, then brush the repair out past the edges.
  • Reinforce splits and laps with a polyester fabric strip worked into the wet material where the specification asks for it.
  • Follow the manufacturer’s product data sheet for coverage, film build, cure and what may be applied over the repair.

Ordering

KST058500 is sold in 1-gallon cans, four to the case. Stocked cases ship in 1 to 3 business days, and anything off the shelf is ordered in on a 1 to 2 week lead. Being solvent-based, it ships as regulated freight, quoted with the order. Pails, drums and totes of coating on the same order go on the same freight quote through the quote form, with the part numbers, quantities, site ZIP and your dates. Every price is quoted per project.

Where it's used

  • Repairs on surfaces that will not clean up

Areas that stay damp, oily or lightly soiled after preparation, which the maker lists among the surfaces this sealant is for.

  • Blisters, splits and patches

Cut and refilled blisters, split laps and patched areas on bituminous roofs, brushed out past the edge of the repair.

  • Flashing and curb repairs

Base flashings, curb angles and wall terminations brushed over a fabric strip where a gunned bead would not cover enough area.

  • Fastener rows and rough metal

Screw lines, seams and pitted metal on older panel roofs, brushed rather than gunned so the material follows the surface.

  • White and light-colored roofs

Repairs on white coated and light metal roofs, where the repair should not read as a dark patch across the field.

Questions

Why brush instead of gun?
Because the defect is an area, not a joint. A blister, a patch or a pitted seam needs material worked over a surface, and a cartridge bead only fills a line.
Can it really go on a damp or oily surface?
The maker lists many roofing materials including damp, oily or slightly dirty surfaces. The manufacturer's product data sheet states the preparation it still expects, so read it before relying on that.
Is it suitable for an EPDM roof?
No. The maker states it is not for EPDM. On EPDM use the MS hybrid sealant, which lists that membrane, or the fleece-backed MS hybrid bonding tapes.
Should it be reinforced with fabric?
On a split or a lap, most specifications three-course a fabric into the repair. The polyester fabrics in the range are listed for that, and the data sheet gives the rates.
How does it ship?
It is solvent-based, so it ships as regulated freight, quoted with the order. Stocked cases leave in 1 to 3 business days.
