KST041512 Uniflex Elastomeric MB Base Coat, Gray
- Modified bitumen base coat
- Sold by the pail
The gray MB base coat in the Uniflex line, for smooth BUR, modified bitumen, granular cap sheets and the other surfaces its data sheet lists. A base coat only, it must be topcoated, and the gray makes the white finish-coat pass easy to read. Pails and 55-gallon drums.
Key benefits
- Gray under a white finish coat, which is the practical reason to choose it over the white version of the same base coat
- Written for asphaltic roofs: smooth BUR, modified bitumen, granular cap sheets and the other surfaces the data sheet lists
- 100% acrylic elastomeric, the same chemistry family as the acrylic finish coats that have to go over it
- A base coat only: the manufacturer states it must be topcoated with an elastomeric finish coat
- Listed for use with polyester fabric or seam tape, so laps, splits and flashings are reinforced inside the coating

Overview
KST041512 is the gray version of the Uniflex MB base coat, and the color is the point. On a granular cap sheet or an old built-up roof, a gray base coat under a white finish coat turns the second pass into something you can inspect from the roof rather than guess at. Some specifications ask for exactly that contrast.
Everything else matches the white: 100% acrylic elastomeric, written for smooth BUR, modified bitumen, granular cap sheets and the other surfaces its data sheet lists, and a base coat only, which the manufacturer states must be topcoated with an elastomeric finish coat. We stock it in pails and drums with KST058600 wet-dry roof cement and KST20385B 12-inch fabric for the details, and KST041300 or KST041500 on top. The white version is KST041510.
Application
- Start on a clean, dry, sound roof. Loose granules, debris, ponding water and open laps come first and they are prep, not coating.
- Details before the field: splits, laps, blisters, penetrations and flashings are closed with roof cement and reinforced with fabric or tape.
- Prime by substrate where the manufacturer’s product data sheet calls for a primer on the surface and condition in front of you.
- Apply at the rates, film build and coat count the manufacturer’s product data sheet states, inside its temperature window.
- Topcoat within the recoat window the data sheet gives. The gray is a base coat, not a finished roof.
Ordering
KST041512 is stocked in the 5-gallon pail and the 55-gallon drum. Stocked material ships in 1 to 3 business days; anything not on the shelf is ordered in and runs 1 to 2 weeks. Drums, pallets and freight go through the quote form with your part numbers, quantities, site ZIP and dates. Every price here is quoted per project, and the patch materials, the base coat and the finish coat can all sit on one quote.
Where it's used
-
Granular cap sheets
Granulated cap sheets, where a gray base coat shows exactly how far the coat has been carried across an awkward surface before the white goes on.
-
Modified bitumen
APP and SBS modified bitumen roofs, named directly on the substrate line, base coated in gray ahead of an elastomeric finish coat.
-
Smooth built-up roofs
Aged smooth BUR being restored rather than replaced, with the splits and laps closed and reinforced before this coat goes over the field.
-
Two-tone quality control
Jobs where an inspector or a specification wants the base coat and the finish coat to be visibly different colors, which a gray base under a white top delivers.
-
Laps, splits and flashings
The coat that beds polyester fabric or seam tape over open laps, splits, penetrations and wall flashings, so the reinforcement ends up inside the system.

Questions
- Why choose the gray over the white?
- Visibility. A white finish coat over a gray base coat shows every thin spot and every missed square foot, which matters on a granular cap sheet. Some specifications require the two layers to differ in color for exactly that reason.
- Can it be left as the top layer?
- No. The manufacturer states that it must be topcoated with an elastomeric finish coat. KST041300 is the premium acrylic white and KST041500 the commercial grade, and both list these asphaltic substrates.
- Is it the same product as KST041510?
- Same base coat, different color. KST041510 is the white and comes in a 275-gallon tote as well as pails and drums; KST041512 is the gray in pails and drums.
- What closes the splits and open laps?
- Patch and detail work before the field is coated. KST058600 is the black wet-dry roof cement listed for asphaltic substrates, and KST20385B is the 12-inch polyester fabric for the three-course method.
- Can it go under a silicone coating?
- No. Uniflex puts no MB base coat under Silicone44. On asphaltic roofs the silicone goes on after a wash and seam work, with Uniflex's Bleed Blocker Primer first where the asphalt is newer or likely to bleed through; we do not stock that primer, so ask on the quote. This base coat belongs to the acrylic system.
- Pail or drum?
- Both are stocked. Send the roof area, the surface type and the site ZIP through the quote form and the quote states the pack count, the delivered price and the ship window.
