Key benefits
- Black is the color for repairs on bituminous and dark roofs, which is where most of this work happens
- Listed for damp, oily or slightly dirty surfaces, so a repair does not wait for perfect conditions
- Brushed out over an area, which suits blisters, splits and pitted metal better than a cartridge bead
- Application and service both listed from -40 F to 250 F
- 1-gallon cans, four per case; the maker states it is not for EPDM

Overview
On a bituminous roof, repairs are black. KST058510 is the black grade of the Uniflex brushable roof repair sealant, a fibered solvent-based material in 1-gallon cans, four to the case, and it is the can a service crew reaches for when the defect is an area rather than a joint.
What earns it a place on the truck is the surface it tolerates. The maker lists many roofing materials including damp, oily or slightly dirty surfaces, which describes most blisters, most splits and most areas around a kitchen exhaust. Application and service are listed from -40 F to 250 F, tack free at 4 hours, cure at 5 days. The stated exclusion is EPDM. White is KST058500, clear is KST058550, and where a troweled cement suits the repair better, KST058600 is the wet-dry roof cement.
Application
- Prepare the area as far as conditions allow: clean, dry and sound where possible, and everything loose removed where it is not.
- Check the substrate before opening the can. This grade is not for EPDM, and the primer, if the system needs one, is chosen by substrate.
- Repair first, seal second. Cut and refill blisters, close splits, refasten loose metal, then brush the sealant out past the edges of the repair.
- Work a polyester fabric strip into the wet material at splits and open laps where the specification calls for reinforcement.
- Follow the manufacturer’s product data sheet for coverage, film build, cure and anything that may be applied over the repair.
Ordering
KST058510 comes in 1-gallon cans, four to a case. Stocked cases leave in 1 to 3 business days; anything not on the shelf is ordered in and takes 1 to 2 weeks. The product is solvent-based and ships as regulated freight, quoted with the order. Send the part numbers, quantities, site ZIP and your dates through the quote form, and drums, totes and pallets on the same order are priced on the same quote. Every price is quoted per project.
Where it's used
-
Modified bitumen and BUR repairs
Splits, open laps and patched areas on modified bitumen and built-up roofs, brushed out beyond the edge of the repair.
-
Blister cut-outs
Blisters that have been cut, dried as far as the weather allows and refilled, where the surface underneath is rarely clean.
-
Oily and gritty surfaces
Areas near exhaust fans and kitchen vents that stay oily after preparation, which the maker lists among the surfaces for this grade.
-
Pitted and rusted metal
Older panel roofs with pitted metal and rough seams, where brushed material follows the surface better than a gunned bead.
-
Emergency and winter repairs
Cold-weather and out-of-season work, within the listed application range of -40 F to 250 F.

Questions
- How is this different from the wet-dry roof cement?
- The roof cement, KST058600, is a troweled cement in several sizes. This is a brushable fibered sealant in gallons, listed tack free in 4 hours with a 5 day cure. Different consistency, different tool, overlapping uses.
- Can it be used on EPDM?
- No. The maker states it is not for EPDM. Use the MS hybrid sealants or the fleece-backed MS hybrid bonding tapes on that membrane instead.
- Will a coating go over it?
- That depends on the coating and on how long the repair has cured; cure is listed at 5 days. The manufacturer's product data sheets for the repair sealant and the coating are what settle it.
- Does it need fabric?
- Splits and open laps are usually reinforced with a polyester fabric strip worked into the wet material. The data sheet gives the rates and the fabrics in the range are listed for it.
- What about freight?
- It is a solvent-based product, so it ships as regulated freight, quoted with the order. Stocked cases ship in 1 to 3 business days.
